A and C are fluorescence images; B and D are phase-contrast images of the same cells. Cells were viewed with the use of a fluorescence microscope, and images were captured as described in the legend to Figure 1. Arrows in A and B denote cells with macropinosomes, and arrowheads in C and D denote cells without macropinosomes. Exposure times for all images were identical. Bar, 10 μm.
