Schematic representation of a combined optode-electrode head probe. The electroencephalography (EEG) international 10-20 positioning system is used to form the base for 64 EEG electrodes. NIRS sources and detectors are then placed in close proximity to these electrodes to form corresponding channels of different lengths. An increase in the number of sources and detectors used results in an increase in channel complexity and an overall improvement in the resolution of the sampled tissue. Figure adapted from Ref.
