Trial procedure of the visual search task in the similar and salient conditions. A trial begins with a fixation cross that appears for 500 ms. This is followed by a 200 ms search display. On 50% of the trials, the target co-appears with a similar contrast stimulus. On the other 50% of the trials, the target co-appears with a salient (i.e., higher contrast) one. The trials were separated by a variable fixation interval ranging from 1500 to 2000 ms.
