Boxplots show the estimated number of Operational Taxonomic Units (OTUs) at 97% sequence identity and the Shannon diversity index with the number of sequences rarefied to 1000 reads per sample. Given that a 3% 16S rRNA divergence is the consensus threshold for sequences belonging to the same species (Yarza et al., 2008) the estimated richness establish the approximate number of species for a given sequencing effort. Statistically significant differences are marked with asterisks (Wilcox test, p<0.0001 in both cases).
