Schematic representation of the two population setups. The blue and red ellipsoids represent the two types of cells, fast and slow growing. (a) Chemostat-type growth. Dilution of the population is implemented by replacing a randomly chosen cell in the population with the newly formed daughter cell, whenever a cell divides. (b) Ideal Mother-Machine.
