Root portions 2 to 6 mm from the root tip were marked at 8 d and seedlings continued growth for 6 more d. A dashed line represents a protoxylem strand. White circles represent LRPs, black circles represent lateral roots. Lateral roots were defined as those primordia that started emergence or emerged from the parent root.
