Mechanisms 1 and 2 are important for virulence in mice. Survival of mice infected intranasally with the retS mutant strains. Mice infected with the wild-type PAO1 strain developed an acute respiratory infection. Two independent experiments were performed, each with five mice per mutant strain (ten mice per mutant strain). The inoculum was 2 × 107 CFUs per mouse. *Indicates strains showing significantly attenuated virulence compared to PAO1 (P < 0.01, Mantel-Cox Log Rank with Bonferroni’s correction for multiple comparisons).
