FE-SEM images of microtome cut, polished, etched and critical point dried surfaces of the fossil brachiopod Q. attenuata. As the fossil shell is devoid of organics (membranes around the fibres, network of fibrils within the fibres), it becomes brittle and fractures when cut with a microtome knife (white stars in A and B).
