Schematic diagram of PpIX-coated SPION nanoclusters. Clusters were formed through the coassembly of the small hydrophobic iron oxide nanoparticles (7 nm in diameter) and the photosensitizer photoporphyrin IX (PpIX). Due to amphiphilic property of PpIX, PpIX was coated onto the SPIO core that was able to solubilize SPIO nanoclusters.
