Simple model of working memory control within the gating framework. Access to WM is controlled via the operation of an input gate that determines whether a stimulus is updated into WM. On the other side, an output gate controls whether or not information within WM can influence on behavior. Two broad classes of policies can be distinguished for selective use of WM – ones that achieve selection via selective input-gating, and ones that rely on selection via output-gating. Adapted from Hazy, Frank, and O’Reilly R (2007).
