ONHs of a human, primate, and tree shrew were reconstructed using a serial sectioning and fluorescent episcopic imaging technique as described previously.45,46 The collagenous connective tissues were segmented,47 showing the trabeculated laminar microstructure in humans, nonhuman primates, and tree shrews, in contrast with rodents that lack a collagenous laminar structure.
