Algorithm for the outpatient management of pulmonary embolism (PE).*If imaging cannot be undertaken same day, then patients may be considered for empirical treatment with either low-molecular-weight heparin or apixaban or rivaroxaban and asked to return within 24 hours for definitive diagnosis, providing they fulfil the remainder of the criteria for outpatient management. †Patients with cancer or those who are pregnant or within 6 weeks post partum may be considered for outpatient management.
