TGFβ inhibits cell cycle progression of proliferating NMuMG cells but protects serum-starved NMuMG cells from apoptosis. (A) NMuMG cells seeded at the density of 10⁶ cells/dish in 60-mm dishes were incubated in DMEM/10% FCS or serum-free DMEM, each ± 2 ng/ml TGFβ. After 24 h, cells were harvested and analyzed for cell cycle and apoptosis as described in MATERIALS AND METHODS. (B) NMuMG cells (10⁶ cells/dish) in 60-mm dishes were incubated in DMEM/10% FCS or serum-free DMEM, each ± 2 ng/ml TGFβ for 72 h. At this time, the monolayers were washed with PBS and the adherent cells were trypsinized and counted with the use of a Coulter counter. Each bar represents the mean ± SD of four dishes.
