Scheme of a forward-scattering geometry. Linearly polarized light is falling on the plane of the sample ($xy$) from above. Analyser can be set to retrieve either a perpendicular component of the laser field ($I_{⏊}$) or a parallel one ($I_{\Vert }$). Analogous situation occurs in the case of a backscattering geometry.
