Schematic representation of the calpain-mediated muscle atrophy and wasting. Calpains are Ca2+-activated cysteine proteases, which might target different intracellular components, such as mitochondria, sarcoplasmic reticulum, myofilaments, leading to muscle atrophy and wasting. Calpastatin represents the negative regulator of calpain activity.
