Column at left (A1–D1): nondiabetic sham, uninephrectomized (UNX), and 5/6-nephrectomized (5/6-NX) kidneys; column at right (A2–D2): diabetic kidneys. A reduction in nephron number lowers the total filtered rates of fluid (GFR), Na+, K+, and glucose and reduces the impact of diabetes on these parameters.
