NGF expression is reduced in gastric ECs of aging (age, ≥70 y) vs young (age, ≤40 y) individuals. (A and B) Immunostaining for NGF in specimens of young individuals (age, ≤ 40 y) and aging individuals (age, ≥70 y) (N = 10 specimens per group). Immunostaining showed significantly reduced NGF expression in ECs lining gastric mucosal blood microvessels of (B) aging individuals (arrows) compared with that of (A) young individuals. No staining was observed in tissue sections incubated without primary antibody (negative control; lower right panels). (C) Quantitative evaluation of NGF immunostaining signal showed significantly (5.5-fold) reduced NGF expression in ECs of mucosal vessels in gastric mucosa of aging vs young individuals.
