The log-log relationships between photosynthesis capacity (the maximum photosynthesis assimilate rate, A_max) and leaf traits including nitrogen concentration (N), phosphorus concentration (P), and leaf mass per area (LMA). Note that A_max values are based on measurements of mass in the upper panels and on area in the lower panels. Data points represent individual leaf values (19, 37, and 47 individuals from pioneer, generalist, and climax species, respectively).
