Interaction between DNA methylation and transcription factors (TFs). (A) Methylated DNA inhibits the binding of TFs to DNA but also creates binding sites for some specific TFs and activates transcription. (B) Transcriptional repressors occupy an mCpG site, thereby blocking transcription. (C) TFs recruit DNA methyltransferases to form a complex and repress transcription.
