Encoded in the genome as part of longer transcripts, pri-miRNA must undergo two processing events in order to generate an active “mature” miRNA. DROSHA cleave pri-miRNA in the nucleus to generate precursor miRNA (pre-miRNA). pre-miRNA are then exported to the cytoplasm via Exportin-5 where there are processed by DICER to generate miRNA.
