Primary olfactory ensheathing cells (OECs) are cultured from an explant tissue. Following the initial outgrowth, the explant is removed and the cells are passaged. Neurotrophin 3 may be used as a purification agent to facilitate expansion of OECs rather than fibroblasts⁸.
