Hypothetical model on SYS-1 robustness. (A) SYS-1 level might be expected to inappropriately increases in the signaled daughter following divisions in the absence of negative regulation. When the level of SYS-1 in the unsignaled daughter of successively signaled daughters reaches the threshold (dashed line) for gene activation, a change of fate will be observed in the cell resulting in a symmetric cell division. (B) Alternatively, following cell division the signaled daughter containing high SYS-1 level (dashed circles) is reduced near its threshold to prepare for subsequent cell division.
