BDL is associated with decreased salt excretion by the kidneys. A rat model of cirrhosis was established by BDL. The animals were placed individually in metabolic cages and a 24-h urine sample was collected before blood collection. Blood and urinary sodium was measured as described in the ‘Materials and Methods’ section and fractional excretion of sodium (FENa) was calculated.
