Stishovite (100) and (110) surfaces: (a) stable cleaved (100) surface; (b,c) unstable cleaved (110) surface; (d,e) stable “dense stishovite” (110) reconstruction. Ball-and-stick and polyhedral representations are given. Blue and red balls are silicon and oxygen atoms. Purple atoms are interlayer oxygens. It is quite surprising that cleaved surface, without any reconstruction, is stable for stishovite (100) surface. The (110) surface of stishovite reconstructs dramatically, and with the bulk structure recovering only in the third polyhedral layer; the second layer being similar to the first layer of the cleaved (110) surface.
