Basal dendrites create a new pathway for recurrent excitatory contacts in the epileptic dentate gyrus. Neuronal reconstruction shows a biocytin-filled PTEN KO cell (green) and a biocytin-filled PTEN-expressing (purple) cell from a PTEN KO (Gli1-CreERT2, PTENfl/fl) mouse. The KO cell exhibits a large basal dendrite. The arrow denotes a point where the axon of the wildtype cell occupies the same focal plane in the z-axis as the PTEN KO cell basal dendrite, suggesting that a synaptic contact could be formed.
