Anoxic precipitation experiments as a function of pH and dissolved CO2. Water compositions initially supersaturated with respect to Fe(OH)2 (to the right of the blue dashed line) generate green rust through the transformation shown in Figure 1. Compositions initially supersaturated with respect to siderite (above the black line) do not generate Fe(II)-carbonate unless a critical supersaturation value (red line; Kcrit) is crossed. Compositions supersaturated with respect to both Fe(II)-carbonate and Fe(OH)2 yield mixtures of Fe(II)-carbonate and green rust; products are dominated by the former as supersaturation increases. 2σ derived from triplicate experiments is smaller than the symbols.
