Figure 115.

Ulcer (double arrow); Metaplasia, squamous; middle ear; guinea pig. The lining epithelium of the tympanic bulla is normally a simple squamous or simple cuboidal epithelium, but can be columnar with goblet cells in ventral areas. The epithelium in this animal has undergone squamous metaplasia (nonkeratinizing). The mucosa is expanded by inflammatory cell infiltrates.
