Inclusion criteria.

  1. A clinical diagnosis of acute ischaemic stroke or intracerebral haemorrhage, confirmed with CT or MRI scana

  2. A score on the NIHSS ≥ 6, indicating moderately severe to severe strokeb

  3. Age 66 years or older

  4. The possibility to start treatment within 24 h of symptom onsetc

  5. Written informed consentd

CT: computed tomography; MRI: magnetic resonance imaging; NIHSS: National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale.

aA normal CT scan is considered compatible with ischaemic stroke.

bNIHSS is assessed at the time of inclusion.

cIn case of a stuttering stroke, treatment should start within 24 h of the moment the first symptoms occurred.
