Schematic diagram depicting the potential roles of Slc26a9 in different organs. Slc26a9 functions as a Cl- channel in the lung and pancreases. In the stomach and kidney, Slc26a9 can function as both a Cl- channel and Cl-/HCO3- exchanger. In addition to functioning as a Cl- channel and Cl-/HCO3- exchanger, four potential roles of Slc26a9 in the duodenum have been discussed in other organs. Slc26a9 and CFTR may interact structurally and/or functionally in a positive fashion to enhance HCO3- secretion. Slc26a9 is a crypt enterocyte anion channel that functions indirectly with regard to transepithelial anion transport and is possibly involved in volume control/apoptosis/migration/differentiation.
