S-Nitrosoglutathione formation in human gastric secretions. Gastric aspirates (pH 3.5–4.5) were mixed with 500 μM GSH and 5 μM NaNO2 in the presence or absence of 5 mM AA or 5 mg/mL of the clinical antioxidant complex, Resiston (containing 5 mM AA in mixture with retinoic acid and tocopherol). GSNO was measured by anaerobic reduction/chemiluminescence in 1 mM cysteine saturated with CuCl as previously reported (Fang et al. 1998). S-nitrosothiol levels measured at baseline were n = 4, with addition of normal pulmonary levels of GSH and nitrite (control) (n = 4), ascorbate (n = 5, p ≤ 0.05) and Resiston (n = 4, p ≤ 0.05).
