Tartrate acid phosphatase (TRAP) staining of L4/5 coronal sections. The osteoclasts were obtained by counting the number of TRAP-positive staining cells (N. Trap+). A few TRAP-positive cells (purple; red arrows) were distributed on the surface of the trabecular of the subchondral bone and were rarely detected in the endplate of control (CT) mice. However, the TRAP-positive cells (purple; red arrows) significantly increased in the subchondral bone and were obviously noted in the endplate of ovariectomized (OVX) mice, suggesting osteoclast activity increases after OVX.
