Synopsis of the DICOM Acquisition Context Module

Acquisition Context Sequence: A data structure that conveys the conditions present during the acquisition of an image. Any number of repetitions of the following set of data elements {enclosed in braces} may be included in the acquisition context sequence.
  • {Concept Name: (i.e., Attribute). A concept from the SNOMED DICOM microglossary (or other message/terminology mapping resource or private coding system) that explicitly denotes the semantic type (i.e., constrains the meaning or defines the role) of the value. The name component of a name/value pair. If a private coding system is used, the potential for interoperability will be limited.

  • Value: A placeholder for the value that is associated with the concept name. One of the mutually exclusive data elements of the following set [enclosed in brackets] substitutes for value and conveys the value of the procedure description attribute.

    • [Numeric Value: Required if the value or values represent an unordered set of one or more integers or real numbers. Measurement units are required if a numeric value is sent.
    • Concept Code: Coded-entry representation of a concept. From the SNOMED DICOM microglossary or another message/terminology mapping resource of private coding system. If a private coding system is used, the potential for interoperability will be limited.
    • Date: Required if the observation value is a date.
    • Time: Required if the observation value is a time.
    • Person Name: Required if the observation value is a person name.
    • Text Value: Categorical-text description of image acquisition context.
    • ]
  • }

Acquisition Context Description: Optional free-text description of data acquisition context.
