The surviving fraction of E. coli cells incubated in 10-mL polycarbonate vessels for 20 min at either room temperature or 45°C. The temperature history is also illustrated. Heated samples were preheated to 45°C in less than a minute before transfer to the thermally preconditioned polycarbonate vessels. There were no significant differences between any observation and the corresponding initial state. Each point represents the mean of means of six replicate experiments.
