Downregulation of activators or repressors accurately simulates the observed PRC in the simple model. (A) For a pulsatile increase of each parameter of the simple model, the minimal error (i.e., minimum of the error over a range of pulse amplitude and phase) between simulated and measured PRCs was calculated using Brent’s optimization algorithm (see Materials and Methods for details). The pulsatile increase of parameters leading to the lowest minimal errors decreases the level of either repressors or activators, which are highlighted in red and blue, respectively. (B) When a pulsatile increase of a pair of parameters decrease the level of repressors or activators, the simple model simulates the accurate PRC.
