Medical informatics can perhaps best be viewed as the name of a basic research discipline that constitutes the methods, techniques, and theories that support a wide range of application domains. Medical informatics researchers typically choose to specialize in one of these application areas, although their basic contributions may well be relevant to other areas of application as well. Their applied contributions generally benefit a biomedical field, such as those shown as examples at the bottom.
