Fig 6. EfaCBA and MntH2 contribute to virulence in a rabbit model of IE.

Fig 6

OG1RF and its derivatives (A-B) Δefa and ΔefaΔmntH1ΔmntH2 or (C-D) ΔmntH2 and ΔefaΔmntH2 were co-inoculated (1:1:1 ratio) into the ear vein of rabbits 24 hours after catheter implantation. After 48 hours, animals were euthanized and bacterial burdens determined in (A, C) hearts and (B, D) spleens. Graphs show the percent of each strain recovered from these sites; each symbol represents an individual rabbit. To indicate that a particular strain was not recovered from the corresponding animal, 0 was set to 1 for visualization purposes. The mean percent recovery is shown as a horizontal line. Statistically significant differences in the percent of individual strains recovered from the rabbit IE experimental model were determined using an ordinary one-way ANOVA with Tukey’s comparison post-test. (*p ≤ 0.05, ** p ≤ 0.01).
