Figure 1

Sequence alignment of ALASs from various species. The amino acid sequence of ALAS from C. crescentus was compared with human ALAS1 (non-specific housekeeping isozyme), human ALAS2 (erythroid-specific isozyme), Sphingomonas WHSC8 (S.WHSC8) ALAS, and R. capsulatus ALAS. The alignment was performed with Genetyx (Software Development Co., Fukuoka, Japan) and ESPript58. The lysine residues predicted to bind PLP are highlighted in yellow and marked with circles, and the residues identified as the heme axial ligands of C. crescentus ALAS are highlighted in green and marked with triangles. The N-terminal extending regions of 186 and 133 residues containing the presequence for human ALAS1 and ALAS2, respectively, are omitted.
