The unusual penta-azamacrocyclic receptor in 44 and 45 is selective for Mn2+, binding of which is reported by the appended BODIPY fluorophore via a mechanism thought to involve suppression of PET [120]. BINOL derivative 46 on the other hand is a ratiometric probe for Zn2+, binding of which can be monitored by following changes in fluorescence emission at 427 and 549 nm [121].
