Relationship of expression rate and mislocalization in isolated protoplasts. Protoplasts isolated from leaves of Arabidopsis thaliana were transiently transformed with constructs encoding either FNR/eGFP (A) or mtRi/eYFP (B), which usually leads to the accumulation of the reporter in chloroplasts and mitochondria, respectively (left panels). However, at high expression levels FNR/eGFP is often found predominantly in the cytosol rather than in plastids, while mtRi/eYFP is found accumulating as aggregates (right panels). All images are maximum intensity projections of several single images representing the complete protoplast in z-axis. The bright green area found in the right panel of image (A) probably represents the nucleus (n). For further details see the legend of Figure 1.
