Schematic depiction of aptamer-gadolinium and aptamer-SPION nanoprobes for cancer cell detection with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) technology. The aptamer can conjugate with gadolinium (Gd(III)) or magnetite (Fe3O4) nanoparticles via strong and specific interactions between the aptamer and the nanoparticle. In this sense, the chimeric molecule could be used as a contrast agent because it could change the magnetic relaxation time in a measurable way when targeting the cancer cell.
