Collateral artery growth. Occlusion of a main coronary artery (left picture) results in severe ischemic cardiac-tissue damage (area of infarction) associated with extensive capillary sprouting in order to remove cell debris. If the loss of the occluded artery is compensated by natural bypass growth (arteriogenesis) (right picture), the extent of tissue damage and newly formed capillary network is strongly reduced.
