CellScope Retina is a handheld, smartphone-based retinal camera that enables fully integrated wide-field retinal imaging. (A, B) The device is designed for easy handheld operation. (B) A detachable display may be magnetically mounted to either side of the device and provides a green dot as a fixation target. (C) The fixation target is translated through a series of positions, re-orienting the patient's eyes and retina in a rapid and controllable fashion. (D) Each individual image is approximately 50°. With the current automated arrangement, five overlapping images are captured of the central, superior, nasal, temporal, and inferior retina. (E) These five images are computationally merged on the phone using custom software to create a wide-field image of the retina spanning approximately 100°.
