The K-Ras membrane anchor encodes a highly specific capacity for lipid binding. The precise amino acid sequence of the polybasic domain (PBD) and prenyl group encodes lipid-binding specificity that is realized as a defined anchor structure. Aggregation of a set of like anchors leads to assembly of nanoclusters with defined lipid compositions (shown as a heat map).
