In epithelial phenotype cells, DMSO can induce significant macromolecular changes that include alterations in membrane phospholipid composition and/or oxidation status of existing lipid molecules, decrease in the nucleic acid content, delayed cell cycle progression, perturbations of protein secondary structure and substantially enhanced Z-form of DNA.
