(A) ChlG catalyses the esterification of chlorophyllide with either GGPP or PPP resulting in GG‐chlorophyll a or phytylated chlorophyll a. Three carbon–carbon double bonds (shown with grey lines) in the geranylgeranyl tail of GG‐chlorophyll a are sequentially reduced to phytol by the geranylgeranyl reductase ChlP. (B) Protein phylogeny of chlorophyll synthases from representative cyanobacteria, algae and plants. The chlorophyll synthases used in this study are shown in bold.
