Morphology of placentas derived from WT in comparison to heterozygous (Hetero) or homozygous (KO) Math6 deficient females at day E10.5. The decidua is located between the labyrinth + junctional zone (L + J) and the myometrium (M) and appeared semicircular in pregnant WT females (A). Complete (B and D) but not partial (C) lack of maternal Math6 led to an altered shape of the placenta with the junctional zone, labyrinth and chorionic trophoblast (Ch) convexly bulging into a crescent-shaped decidua (B/D). Additionally, the number of trophoblast giant cells in the junctional zone (black arrows) was increased in placentas lacking maternal Math6 (compare A′and B′). The placenta phenotype is independent of the paternal i.e. the resulting embryonic Math6 genotype (compare B and D).
