Schematic attentional selection as suggested by the Selective Tuning model. When a signal from an attended stimulus reaches the top layer, a top-down winner-take-all (WTA) mechanism localizes this stimulus. During this process, the mechanism inhibits irrelevant connections that surround the attended stimulus, thus, attentional surround suppression occurs (adapted from Hopf et al., 2006 with permission).
