The addition of cytochrome c to biomimetic and native mitochondrial monolayers decreases the elasticity modulus. Monolayers were constructed with (A) biomimetic membranes composed of (18:0–22:6)PC/(16:0–20:4)PE/(18:2)4CL/DOPI/DOPS/Chol (40/30/20/5/3/2 mol %) or (B) native mitochondrial phospholipids from native phospholipids extracted from isolated murine cardiac mitochondria. Pressure-area isotherms were analyzed at a physiologically relevant pressure of 30 mN/m to calculate the elasticity modulus (C and D), in the absence or presence of 17 μm cytochrome c (cyt c). Data are average ± S.D. from three to six independent experiments. Asterisks indicate significance from monolayers in the absence of cyt c: ***, p < 0.001.
