(A) and (B): HIV‐1 PCR and viral load (VL) results in cases with positive (a–d) and uncertain HIV infection status (e–i), respectively. The time periods for which maternal antiretroviral therapy (ART), infant prophylaxis of daily dose nevirapine (ddNVP) and infant ART were given are represented by progressively lighter shades of grey. HIV‐1 PCR tests were all done on whole blood and VL tests performed on plasma except where DBS is indicated. Due to space constraints some later repeat PCR negative or VL TND results were omitted (cases f–h).
