Effects of momordicine I on high-glucose-induced cell proliferation and collagen synthesis in rat cardiac fibroblasts. (a) Chemical structure of momordicine I. (b) Effect of momordicine I (0.1, 0.3, 1, 3, and 10 μM) on cell viability in cardiac fibroblasts. Cell viability was quantified through MTT assay. Effects of momordicine I on high-glucose-stimulated fibroblast proliferation (c) and collagen synthesis (d) were assessed through BrdU and 3H-proline incorporation. Rat cardiac fibroblasts were cultured in a serum-free normal-glucose medium (5.6 mM glucose) or high-glucose medium (25 mM glucose) in the absence or presence of momordicine I (0.1, 0.3, and 1 μM) for 24 h. Results were presented as mean ± SEM (n = 4). P < 0.05 versus the control group; #P < 0.05 versus the high-glucose group.
